Phytolipids

What are Glycolipids and Phytoglycolipids?

Two very important classes of lipids in the skin (which are closely related) are Glycolipids and Sphingolipids.  There is in fact a relationship between them.  Simply stated, a glycolipid is a lipid (fat), which contains a sugar.  A sphingolipid is a lipid derived from a sphingoid backbone.

Cerebrosides, the most important lipids in the skin are both glycolipids and sphingolipids.  Ceramides, also important components in the skin are cerebrosides, which have lost their sugar.  Therefore ceramides are sphingolipids not glycolipids.

The prefix Phyto- refers to materials derived from plants.  Most glycolipids and sphingolipids are either bovine (cow) or porcine (pig) derived.  However, our Granlipid  products are Phyto-glycolipids and are in fact derived from plants.

The role of cerebrosides and ceramides in the skin is quite well known.  Dr. Elias and his co-workers have elegantly demonstrated the importance of cerebrosides, ceramides and other sphingolipid structures in the epidermis.  In addition to being responsible for cell-cell adhesion and moisture barrier properties in the stratum corneum, glycolipids control epidermal cell metabolism and can regulate and normalize abnormal rates of cell division.

Aging dramatically reduces the amount of cerebrosides in the skin.  It is very important therefore, to supplement the epidermis with glycolipids to help minimize the adverse effects of the aging process.
